This is bugging me

I know this is a tired old discussion, but I have this conversation ,like, at least once a week:

Them: "Twitters shit"
Me: "Have you ever used it"
Them: "no"

!!!??? Whaaat!!??

I'm not arsed if they don't want to use Twitter. They don't even have to try it if they don't think it's for them. Whatever. But you can't just slag it off if you don't know anything about it.

Their main argument for not using Twitter will be something like "It's all inane babble, I don't want to know what people have had for lunch"

And the logic here fails again. These people will inevitably be Facebook users. Inane babble anyone?

If I'm being really judgemental, Facebook updates are pretty much just inane babble aimed at getting some attention "Oh, I've had SUCH a bad day, I just want a hug :(" or "Some men are idiots" (Prompting the "Oh why honey, whats wrong" response) Although, I did just log in and couldn't find an update from a real person that wasn't trying to promote something.

Also, how ironic is this? It's a group where people talk about how Twitter is a waste of time and Internet space.

On FB (in my experience) you generally end up with people you USED to know but don't know anymore (school mates etc. I've got a greying beard ffs, why do I care?). They never interact. Then there's people you DO know but it's a kind of mutual assurance. If you want to tell them something, you just wait till you see them down the pub.

However, with a couple (literally) of exceptions my twitter list is full of people I don't know and will NEVER meet. Yet we converse and learn. If I had a problem with some code (for example) and I needed to hit up my virtual contacts for a brainstorm, I'd go to twitter I wouldn't even consider FB. Some mouth-breather I went to primary school with who is now essentially a breeder doesn't care.

I wouldn't ask @gablaxian though, he wouldn't know the answer.

The main criticism I have of Twitter (and I'm a huge fan) is not the inane babble of what people have for lunch - I actually quite like that stuff - its the really *really* bad marketing on there. A lot of organisations, and this includes large corporations, think that being able to instantly communicate "BUY OUR SHIT!" to thousands of people somehow translates into sales. It doesn't - it translates into complaints. Twitter is a great tool for marketing but it has to be considered that it is, by its very nature, a device for conversation, not broadcast. It drives me to almost insanity how so many people don't get that.

Facebook has just been a victim of its own success. It was ace at first to be able to invite people to events, share photo albums with friends etc, but as it grew beyond all expectations the sheer volume of spammy invites and groups just caused it to buck.e. In exactly the same way MySpace did before it. And it'll probably happen again at some point. Twitter will probably be ok because by design its very light anyway. Though my recent experience with spamming nutjobs adding me to lists (see my rants today) is perhaps an indication that it does have its own vulnerabilities.

I find Facebook to be a place to get a sense of inner fulfillment by periodically culling your friends list whilst Twitter is better for knowledge sharing, functional interaction, and marketing. I use Twitter much less than I should.

And for the record... if someone on Facebook posts an attention seeking comment I'm more inclined to poke them with a stick rather than console them. Let's face it, if they're going to probe the internet - and specifically a collection of 400 people that they've not seen since school - for emotional support, they're barking up the wrong tree with me!

Twitter has it's use once you filter out the inane.

This is a very good point - I've actually gained a few friends and contacts through Twitter, with my Facebook 'friends' being the opposite. Random people I've met maybe once who have then gone and added me.

I would happily delete my Facebook profile but sadly I need to use it for work.

Another interesting factoid about the two. I've set my blog to alert both FB and Twitter when I post a new rant. Looking at the page hits, I get double the amount from FB than I do from Twitter, yet the only comments (bar 1 today*) I ever receive are referred from the latter.

Personally, I think FB is actually anti-technology (in that it's very hard to do anything that involves the exterior of the FB microcosm, so why bother?) or at least the vast amount of my 'friends' seem to be.

*I actually got a comment via a FB user about 30mins ago. He'd seen the post on FB, surfed out to read it, but instead of leaving a comment at the source, went back to FB to do it. Eh?

Cool, thanks for commenting! I actually timed that to go live 'late at night' so not many people saw it (I didn't want to look too much like a big rant face) Turns out 12:30 aint that late and you were all still up!

I also suspected it might fuel a bit of Facebook vs Twitter. Although this isn't what I was aiming for, I feel left out, so heres my take on Facebook vs Twitter:

Facebook: I let people market to me there. i don't mind a bit of marketing so I know what's going on. I sometimes get comments from real people, so check it, cos I don't want to miss out. This is about it really. Although I did used to use it more for arranging to meet up with people etc, but that was years ago.

Twitter: I've never found out more stuff/ met so many interesting people before. It's helped me get work, promote stuff and learn new things. But most of all it's enabled me to meet people in real life and create real friendships/ partnerships.

BUT it does depend on how you use it. It can be shit if you do it wrong.

@Simonwebbon, I noticed you were having trouble with shitty marketing lists. I haven't actually been affected much bad marketing on Twitter (Yet) I got put in one called 'porshe' once. i didn't mind. that's about it. Give it time. There's ALWAYS going to be bad marketing, EVERYWHERE. I think Twitter makes it harder to do. there's also some brands ding really good stuff. More loyalty/service/customer retention and relations stuff that should change the way businesses work eventually.
